This recipe for lotion bars is a game-changer.
With low-cost ingredients and a quick turnaround time, these make a perfect DIY gift (especially during the winter months when everyone’s skin needs a little extra attention!) You can also feel good knowing exactly what you’re putting on your body. They’re nice to keep in your purse, at work, & in the car (during cool months). Each bar also seems to last forever!
Simple & All-Natural Ingredients
You can find so many recipes for lotion bars out there, but this one is my favorite because it’s so simple and yields some amazingly creamy, non-greasy results. The recipe that I’m sharing will make approximately six bars, but can be adjusted accordingly. You will need:
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 beeswax pellets
- (optional) fragrance/essential oil
Instructions
- Combine & melt coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can make your own by using a glass bowl over a saucepan of water. You can also melt in the microwave by heating in small increments on the “soften” setting.
- Once the ingredients are melted, allow them to cool briefly. Add in any fragrance / essential oil to your desired potency.
- Pour mixture into molds or a rectangular pan (they can be cut into bars later).
- Allow lotion bars to cool completely and then cut or remove from molds. If you’re impatient, you can put them in the refrigerator to speed up the cooling process.
Storage
Lotion bars work best when stored in a cool, dry environment. They will melt if left in direct sunlight. I like storing mine in little rectangular tins so that I can use them for travel. They also make amazing gifts this way!
Customizing the Recipe
You can truly make the recipe all your own by adding any additions you like once the base ingredients are combined and melted. Not only can you customize the fragrance with endless possibilities, you can also change up the appearance by adding food-grade dye, glitter, the sky is the limit! You could also switch it up by putting your mixture in various molds and containers. I’m excited to try pouring mine into shallow glass tubs for lotion on the go.
