Confession: I’m in love with transforming tired vintage pieces into fun & interesting home decor for our near century-old farmhouse. I think it’s a fantastic way to transport the past to the present, not to mention a really frugal and fun way to decorate your home. While I love almost any old kitchenware, I find that many vintage pieces need a little love and attention to reach their full modern farmhouse decor potential.
When we bought our house, we inherited lots (and I mean LOTS) of old items belonging to the original owners. When we first rummaged through an old storage building, I was immediately drawn to this old wooden cake stand. It was dirty with chips of brown paint peeling off of the splintered wood. I couldn’t wait to breathe new life into this diamond in the rough! Well.. a year later, here we are.
The project was pretty straightforward and took maybe 30 minutes (many of which were spent deciding whether I wanted to paint or stain the wood; very glad I decided to paint) but wow at the transformation! After thoroughly washing the decades of dirt off, I simply sanded the wood, removing all excess paint, and then painted with Folk Art Chalk Paint in Glacier.
Since it still looked a little plain, I decided to add the “Yum” in a skinny font to the ceramic base. Instead of busting out the Cricut, I decided to just use my Sharpie skills (guided by tape placed above and below the middle area so I could write in a straight line).
Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out! Although it will probably be used just as decoration in my hutch, I think it’d be really cute with cookies or pastries inside. Piece of advice: if you have vintage decor that you love but it doesn’t really fit into your home’s style, add some paint! You’ll be amazed by the transformation.
Stay tuned for more vintage flips!
